Places I've Lived

My dad was a corporate nomad, moving as promotional opportunities arose in his chemical engineering career in synthetic rubber and associated manufacturing. He worked on the design, then the construction, and then managed the facility before moving to a new project. I was the last kid so got the benefit (or burden) of most of the moves during the peak of his career. So here is my Places I've Lived list:

Baytown, Texas, 1944-53 (near Houston)
Ashtabula, Ohio, 1953-56 (near Cleveland and Erie, PA; PVC plant for General Tire)
Azusa, California, summer of 56, (near LA; design phase of Odessa, TX facility)
Odessa, Texas, 1956 - 1959 (between Dallas and El Paso, near Midland; synthetic rubber plant)
Muskogee, Oklahoma, late 1959 to early 1960 ( jet fuel manufacturing plant)
Tyrone, PA, first six months of 1960 (Dad was in London for design phase of the India plant so we lived with my maternal grandmother while I finished ninth grade.)
London NW8, England, June, 1960 to June 1961 (design phase of India plant)
Mussoorie, UP, India, June 1961 - May 1963 (while attending high school)
Bareilly, UP, India, winters of 62 and 63 (synthetic rubber plant project, first in Asia)

In making up this list, I realize how much my mother and father were separated during my childhood due to school schedules that left my mom and us trailing my father by 6 - 8 months when he transitioned to a new job or location. Local control of education has bred widely varying curriculums that do not accommodate a mobile work force. Where I live now, I am quite an oddity. Until recently, four generation of Michiganders could all get jobs in manufacturing quite easily. Moving from one's birthplace was unusual, and moving for a job was unknown to them. I grew up expecting to move with most promotions, just like my dad. And here I've been in Michigan for 33 years.

Ted's Alu & Phulgobi Recipe

Those of you who were here at my place in July will remember Ted's marvelous Alu-Phulgobi (आलू फुल्गोबी)           dish that he cooked for one of our lunches.  Here is the recipe (thanks to Ted's sister Charlene).  I've cooked it twice.  The first time I ended up with far too much liquid if I added the water the recipe calls for, so the second time I didn't add any water at all and it came out just right.  (I guess it depends on how much water gets released from the onions.)  I also added the potatoes before the cauliflower because the potatoes take much longer to cook and the cauliflower can get mushy quickly.


INGREDIENTS

2/3 cup oil

1 tsp crushed garlic

1 tsp finely chopped ginger root

1/2 tsp. white cumin seeds

1 tsp chili powder

1 tsp salt                                  

1 pinch (or more) of turmeric                             

4 dried chilies  (Charlene omits, but go with your own preference)

1/2 cauliflower cut into small florets

2 medium onions sliced

3 medium potatoes

fresh cilantro leaves

2/3 cup water (Hank adds no water)

Directions 

1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan

2. Add the cumin seeds (Charlene uses regular cumin seeds) and dried chilies and mix

3. Add the onions to the pan and fry, stirring occasionally until golden brown

4. Mix the ginger, garlic, chili powder, salt, and turmeric together. Add this mixture to the onions and stir-fry for about 2 minutes.

5. Add the potatoes and cauliflower to the onion and spice mixture, stirring to coat the vegetables in the spice mixture.

6. Reduce the heat and add the fresh cilantro leaves and water to the pan. Cover and simmer the mixture for about 10- 15 minutes.

7. Transfer the potato and cauliflower curry to warm serving plates and serve immediately.

And whole wheat soft tortillas make a great substitute for chapati (चपाती).

So Where in the World Have You Been, Pray Tell?

At our GNID reunion at Hank’s in July 2010, some of us were sitting around talking about places we’d lived at some point in our lives.

And we started a list of GNID-visited countries. Wow, what an international group we are! I never knew that Larry was born in Algeria, and that Marilee’s been all over Africa, and....

The rule we followed was that you could “qualify” to say you’d lived in a country if you had spent at least four consecutive weeks there (maybe we said 6 weeks, I forget; for purposes of this list, I’m making a unilateral ruling that four weeks is sufficient).

So here’s a beginning of the list, with the initials of the class member who “lived” there. I only included on the list so far the names of those of us who were playing this game, although I know of other classmates who’ve lived elsewhere. I didn’t want to presume to add them without their permission.

Please feel free to make corrections and additions of any other countries and remember to include your name in the COMMENTS section at the end of this. I expect we collectively have lived in many more places. What a novel we could write!

Thanks, Hank, for your work on launching this blog. I will try to use it frequently next month when Connie and I will go to Woodstock. After our time there, we will visit the Darjeeling/Sikkim region followed by a few days seeing sights from Agra to Jaipur. I'm guessing most of the hotels we stay at will have hot spots for us to log in.

Meanwhile, we're sitting here with suitcases packed ready to hop in the 4runner at a moment's notice. Connie's daughter, Anne, was due to deliver a boy baby yesterday, so it could happen ... at any moment!

We had a good visit with Steve Fiol two weeks or so when he came to Eugene to visit his family, in particular a grandson who is only a few weeks old. This does seem to be grandparent age for us, doesn't it? I'll try to find a picture to post.
